What is Microsurgery?

 

Microsurgery is the surgery performed with an operating microscope. The structures operated can be  as small as a  millimeter in size. The surgery can be done on arteries, veins, nerves and lymphatics.
Typically microsurgery needs advanced level of training to be able to perform it sucessfuly on in an repetetive and predictabele manner. It needs the use of sophisticated technology like  the use of an operating microscopes on magnification loupes  and good instruments in order to be able to perform this variety of delicate surgery.
The common uses of microsurgery are reconstruction following cancer surgery, accidents or certain birth deformities.
The surgery on artries amd veins is known as microvascular surgery and the surgery on nerves is called microneural surgery.
Micro surgery has expanded the scope of reconstructive surgeries that can be offered to a patient.


It is also used to reimplant cut fingers, hands, legs scalp  etc. Micro surgery is also used in treating peripheral nerve disorders like brachial plexus injuries etc. Microsurgical techniques are indispensible in hand surgery as it can help to deliver better results.
